Mixology

A breakup teaches you something. For me it was mixology. Get a drink, and try not to call her.

I wonder what a breakup teaches you in this world. This is what it taught me: I learnt mixology. Get a drink, and try not to call her.

It was November 2024, right after the breakup, and I started drinking more than I should have. Not proud of that, but it happened. I learnt to make drinks from YouTube, and picked up a few tips and recipes from Instagram reels.

cucumber gin & tonic. stress from work: just add all of it

The first drink I ever made was a cucumber gin and tonic, and it was a good one, it refreshed the hell out of me. The reel caption lists the ingredients as cucumber, gin, tonic, ice, and stress from work (just add all of it). Beginner’s luck, which I’ve been trying to live up to ever since.

And I never drunk called her, or anyone. I’ve always kept my drinking a sacred thing, so the method on this page works, and I’m the only case study.

The pink one at the top of this page is a cranberry cinnamon sour, gin based, and it’s one of my three regulars along with a whiskey sour and a tequila sunrise.

Tequila Sunrise

  • Tequila, 60 ml
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Strawberry crush (or grenadine)
  • Anything you like for garnish
  1. Fill the glass with ice to the top. (Small or medium cubes dilute slowly.)
  2. Pour the tequila first, so it chills while you prep the rest.
  3. Add fresh orange juice, the kind that actually smells like oranges.
  4. Pour in the strawberry crush or grenadine for the sunrise tint. (I used Mala’s and thinned it a little.)
  5. Give it a gentle stir. Garnish and serve.

Simple, fresh, and made with love.

You get one recipe out of me, and it’s the tequila sunrise, written down the way I posted it. I’ll have you know it’s the easiest of the three to get right, which is the only reason it’s the one I trust you with.

The home bar: a TV unit lined with bottles including Glenfiddich, Jose Cuervo, The Glenlivet, Jaisalmer gin, Jagermeister and Indri, with board games on the shelf below
the home bar. the board games are underneath.

All of it gets made at home, on a TV unit that has more bottles on it than a TV unit should, and yes, the board games are underneath, so the evening always has a plan B. On the shelf right now: Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, Indri, Jaisalmer gin, Jägermeister, Jose Cuervo, and a few more.

behind the scenes. press play.

And this is what shooting one of those reels looks like from behind: a camera, a light, a bottle-lined TV unit, and someone crouching on the floor for the shot. Every ten-second pour on Instagram is a lot more crouching than it looks.

feeling light, so I poured something that matches the mood

The whiskey ones I make when I’m feeling light, which is apparently a mood you can pour.

a little vodka, a little citrus, and a feeling I haven't told you about yet

And now and then there’s a vodka experiment too. That caption is mine, and I’m still not telling you about the feeling.

All of it lives on Instagram, and the link is at the bottom of this page, if you’d like to watch a frontend developer pour things.

Get a drink, and don’t call her.
